Voice Disorder Treatment in Dublin
Voice disorders are common in children and are sometimes caused by vocal abuse including loud talking, talking for too long, shouting, forceful use of voice (especially during play) and childhood infections.
Repetitive vocal abuse puts stress and strain on the vocal cords which can result in the development of nodules (little bumps or growths on the vocal cords) or polyps (larger bump-like growths, blister-like growths or lesions on the vocal cords).
Before you attend a Speech and Language Therapist for voice difficulties in children, it is important that your child first has an assessment with an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor to diagnose the type of voice problem.
Once the medical assessment is complete Speech and Language Therapists at Spectrum Health generally treat voice disorders in children with behavioural voice therapy. We can teach your child about good vocal care and proper usage to prevent any future abusive vocal behaviour in a variety of situations.
Child Friendly: All exercises and treatment modalities that we use are child friendly and usually involve using pictures and games to elicit the target. We will use games and reward structures to motivate your child in the sessions.
Guidance: We will guide you on the best ways to successfully transfer the skills learned in our clinic to home and other everyday settings.
Support: Worksheets will be provided each week in order to encourage and facilitate regular practice and improvement at home between your child’s sessions. At all stages throughout the treatment plan, we will provide detailed guidance for you on how to support your child’s voice between sessions depending on the stage of treatment.
